You haven't failed your New Year's Resolutions

Bare winter tree on a blue sky, in the centre there is black text on a white background which reads you haven't failed your New Year's Resolutions

You haven’t failed  your New Year’s resolutions. I have beenseeing people talk about how It makes no sense that we try and make a new startin the middle of winter and it makes a lot of sense to me. New Year’sresolutions often seem to feel forced rather than coming from a place offollowing passions and setting intentions that bring us closer to things wereally want to achieve.  If we lookaround ourselves at this time of year the rest of nature is hibernating orfallow. There’s no leaves on the trees, nature is sleeping.

This is a time to lean into comfort, allow yourself to takeit slow do what you need to do to look after yourself. Show up for yourselfwith compassion, fuel yourself well and instead of forcing yourself to dosomething that you may only be doing because society has told you that is agood idea, conserve energy. Listen to your body and give yourself permission todo what you need to do. This is something we need to be aware of all year-roundbut seems particularly important in the middle of winter.

If we follow the examples of nature and the seasons the  best time to look at trying new things andsetting new goals may be spring, when the world starts to wake up again thedays are finally noticeably longer. This will probably mean that there is moreenergy to explore new things and follow new ideas or create new habits ratherthan working against  the cycles ofnature.

If that negative self-talk has been getting you down this isyour permission to rethink what you want to do, so that actually fits in withyour life and your energy levels and revisit other goals when the sun isfinally more present in our lives again.

If this has been helpful for you and you feel like it wouldbe valuable to explore these ideas further please book an intro call with metoday to see if counselling with me would be a good fit.
